Navy and Rose for Inspiration

I love my pinterest.   Found this tonight. See how well the rose and navy work together?  The earth tones  and whites aren't too shabby either.   And right after repinning it I found a clothing shot that echoes it:

I love when that happens!

A Citrus Confection

I just found this on a swedish blog natalie jo blog I found somehow...

Something I learned in Fashion Illustration. Always put a partial part of the print on the skirt or legging or whatever that way it appears more real.  Makes the eye think it's a curve. clever right?

Who would have thought of doing it for a cake?  I 'll have to show some of my chef friends like NOW.

And here's an example of that technique on a fashion Illustration:

Crochet Scene on the Street- Soho

Who'd a thunk a crochet tricycle would be in front of the Apple Store?  And who made this anyway?   It had a big chain wrapped around it like the other bikes.  It seems to work too.  So cute!

Summer Babies in a Tree!

Just spent 2 weeks in Michigan with my family.    My brother Paul and his family were in town as well. He is an arborist in Charlotte, NC and whenever he comes up to visit, my parents have lots of work for him to do in their yard.

While in the process of trimming a few branches from some of their older trees they discovered that a squirrel's nest went down with one of the branches too!  Probably fell 30 feet but the 3 little squirelettes (?) were perfectly fine.  The nest was really cool and beautifully constructed with dried grass, leaves and branches.

Check out the nest.  Very well padded and beautiful in itself!!

After the guys completed work on the trees we put the nest in a basket and somehow my brother got it back up in the tree:
Peeking into the nest before going back into the tree.

Oh and baby squirrels are referred to as pups, kits or kittens!! Who knew?

Decorate: The Book by Holly Becker

As a former Blogging Your Way  (BYW) student I was recently invited to a book signing for Holly Becker's new book Decorate at the Anthropologie store in NYC:

I was a bit late with the RSVP but I'm on the list now so I'm hoping to see other BYWers I met online, at the book signing.   (Holly writes a terrifically successful blog decor8)  She is the ultimate blogger and writer ; creating her own opportunities working creatively on the web.
Will let you know how the event goes!  In the meantime check out her book:

Who doesn't love a fun decorating book with lots of ideas and resources?  Can't wait to get my copy. Been holding off for too long!

Tell me what you think of the book.  It's gotten terrific reviews!!

August Break and The MakerFaire in Detroit

Over at Susannah Conway's blog I am participating in her August Break.  The idea is that every day for the month of August,  bloggers share one photo. If they can... no pressure!!  So far I've only posted once so I better get going!!

Last weekend we went to the MakerFaire in Detroit and there were lots of fun photo ops!!

Here's my first set of photos from the fair:

Do you think the guy hot-glued everything to this little truck/car?

And where did he find all this stuff? Garage Sales?

And aren't these little faces cute?

OK. So signing off until tomorrow with some more photos....  Be sure to go over to my last post. Another fun activity from the MakerFaire.  It's a  DIY marbleizing project...

Birthday Party Craft- Marbleized Book Marks

Last year I wrote a post about an Alice in Wonderland Birthday Party I threw for my eldest daughter.  Unexpectedly (to me at least)  it gets the most views on my blog... Guess it's telling me something.

I am visiting my family in Detroit and decided to take the kids to the Maker Faire over the weekend.  It was a science craft-driven fair (organized by the group of  makezine.com websites).  Lots of fun stuff to do and see but this was the activity that my kids loved the most so here's my first tutorial...

Marbleized Book Marks

The Result:

You'll need:

  • 1 can shaving cream ( any brand will do, just nothing with menthol!!)
  • Food Coloring
  • cardboard square at least 12"x12"
  • aluminum foil
  • long skewer sticks or wooden dowels
  •  Spackling tool
  • strips of paper sized for book marks.
The Steps:

1. Cover a surface with aluminum foil. I use a dry cleaner shirt cardboard. Tape to table. Spray out some of the shaving cream on to the surface.

2. Using a dropper,  add food coloring of choice.

3. Use a dowel or wooden stick to swirl the colors around.  Don't over do it - you'll end up with a brown mess. Here we swirled horizontally.  (It's not obvious but the  stick is at the bottom of the  right-hand corner of this photo.)

4. Here we used the stick to pull the colors down vertically.

5. place bookmark-sized paper on top of marbleized shaving cream.  Lift off and put down on a clean piece of foil.

6.  Using a spackling knife scrape off the foam starting from the bottom and scraping upward.
Lift off foil, let dry  and you have a bookmark.

We used basic 20 lb. paper but next time I'd like to try it with a heavier weight paper and possibly try covering a box with it...

I hope this helps with at least one activity for your next birthday party or maybe a rainy Saturday afternoon one day this Fall.... Tell me what you make with your beautiful paper!
